According to Hollywood, anyone who rides a sportbike love to race, ride at speeds that eclipse posted speed limits and get their thrills from attempting stunts that make non riders shiver. In movies such as Torque (2004) and Biker Boyz (2003) riders of these light and fast machines never seem to follow the rules of the road.

Wild Hogs – Calling out the RUBS

The 2007 movie Wild Hogs is about four older professional men trying to reclaim their youth, sense of self, courage and meaning in their lives. In the biker world these four characters are the exact image of the rich urban biker. In the movie the main characters come across a supposed outlaw biker gang “The El Diablos”. In this scene the leader of the gang calls the main characters out, saying they are not really bikers.

Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs

The concept of the outlaw motorcycle gang began in the late 1940′s. After a series of violent events the American Motorcyclist Association made the statement that 99% of all motorcyclists were good citizens with no interest in such violent actions. From this statement the concept of the 1%’er came about. 1% became the moniker of those bikers who wanted to be know as outlaws. Many of these bikers began wearing patches with 1% to show their breaking with the traditional motorcyclist organizations.

R.U.B.s or rich urban bikers was a term coined by experienced Harley Davidson riders to describe the new numbers of business professionals who are getting into riding. A past time that was once reserved by the “outlaw” set has become a popular activity of the wealthy and well to do. The prices of Harley Davidson’s have been on the rise over the years. A basic Sportster model has a starting price of just under $7,000. The price of custom bikes can exceed well over $100,000. What was once a culture of grease, grime and spare parts has become one of status, custom paint, and high priced hogs.

Biker Boyz (2003) is a modern biker film. The movie focuses on rival Biker Clubs in California. This action film is filled with action scenes of illegal road races and attempts to show the sport biker mentality.

Easy Rider

Easy Rider(1969) is considered the quintessential biker movie. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper portray two bikers riding from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Along the way they encounter groups who accept them for who they are and others they treat them with fear and hatred.
